Installing Semi-Frameless Glass Fencing To Wooden Decking Around A Pool

Posted on

Glass fencing around a pool area can add a touch of aesthetic elegance. It can also act as a safety barrier that prevents young children and animals from wandering into the pool. It is a fairly easy job to install glass fencing on your own, but you will need another person to help you lift the glass into place. You will also need an electric drill, and some caulk. Follow these steps to install the glass fencing.

Preparation

Locate the position where you intend your first end post to be installed. Mark this position, and measure back from here to locate the place for the next post. Mark where this post will be placed. The distance between the posts should represent the length of the panel of glass you are installing.

Drill The Holes

Position one of the semi-frameless glass posts on your end post marker. Make sure you position the post so that the inside grooves of each post – the place that the glass will slide into – face each other. Then, using the drill, secure the post into the wood by drilling in the bolts. Set the other post on the marker you made, and repeat. If your posts have a cosmetic facing to hide the bolts, slide them over the posts and into place over the base. You should now have the two posts in position, ready to receive the glass.

Rubber Buffer

With the fencing system, you will have rubber buffers which prevent the glass from reaching the ground as it sits in the grooves of the posts. Slide a rubber buffer into a post and down to the base of the groove. Insert a rubber buffer into the other post as well. It is important to check that both posts are level; do this with a leveler, checking both sides of each post. If it is not level, you can partially remove the bolts, and insert a small shim (at the appropriate side) to level the posts.

Insert The Glass

You will need a pair of gloves which provide a good grip when handling glass, and a helper to help you place the glass into the grooves of the posts. Carefully insert the glass squarely onto the rubber buffers.

Adjusting Any Play

It is now time to check if you have any 'play' between the glass and the grooves. If the glass moves slightly when in this position, you can use the small rubber block that was supplied with the system. This will fit in the margin between the glass and the groove, and eliminate any play. Cut a thin edge off the rubber block with a sharp knife and insert into the groove next to the glass.

Once you have the glass stable, you can caulk both edges of the groove on either side of the glass. Remove excess caulk with a flat edge and a little water.
