3 Steps to Finding the Ideal Bathroom Mirror Size

Posted on

Whether for shaving, doing your makeup, or simply admiring yourself, every bathroom needs a good mirror. However, you need to make sure that you choose one of the right size. A poorly proportioned mirror will make a room seem unevenly decorated, so it's well worth reading this quick and easy guide to make sure that you get it right while doing bathroom renovations

1. Find the Right Width

You can't decide on the ideal mirror size before you've worked out how much wall space you have to play with in the bathroom itself, so it's time to whip out your measuring tape.

Begin by measuring the vanity above which you will fit the mirror; if you're renovating the whole bathroom, make sure you decide on the vanity first so you can use its given dimensions. It usually looks a little awkward if the mirror is either much larger or smaller than the vanity beneath it, so try to match up the sides of each to give a professional appearance. The width should be just about the same as that of the vanity, maybe a little smaller if necessary.

2. Find the Right Height

Next, take your tape measure and find the distance between the top of the vanity and the ceiling. You want to leave around six inches of wall space at the bottom to avoid too many water stains on the mirror, plus a similar distance from where the wall meets the ceiling to stop the space looking too crowded.

If you're going to be fitting a frame around the mirror, remember to take its size into account. Additionally, you'll need to measure up to the level of the bathrooms lights if they are not recessed.

3. Place Some Paper

You should now have a rough idea of the size of mirror that you need, but it can still be hard to work out exactly how it will look. After you've looked at some mirrors, take down their sizes and then cut some pieces of paper to match them. Tape those on the wall to make sure that your measurements are accurate and that the potential size will work.

Above all, remember to make sure that the mirror will be practical. Stand as you would while shaving or applying makeup to check that your whole face would be visible.

There are plenty of pre-cut mirror sizes available, so you should now find it easy to select the right one for your bathroom.
