Posted on

Your kitchen benchtop is a great place to add an excellent sense of design, functionality, and touch to your kitchen. The choices of benchtop finishes and designs are many, and when choosing one, you will want to select a durable material that will hold up well to the wear and tear of cooking and other kitchen activities. Laminate benchtops can deliver on many aspects, including durability, aesthetics, and low or easy maintenance among others. However, it is important to know what you should do and what you shouldn't when it comes to maintenance of your kitchen laminate benchtops to help extend their service life. For this reason, here are a few things you should know about maintaining your kitchen laminate benchtops.

Effective Cleaning of Your Benchtops

Cleaning is the most basic element of maintenance so you need to do it right and use the right cleaning tools. First, use a soft cloth for daily cleaning of your benchtop surface because it won't scratch or damage the laminate finish.

Wipe off spills as soon as possible to prevent the possibility of permanent staining of your benchtop from strong spills. For stubborn stains, apply a paste of baking soda and water, methylated spirits, or diluted bleach mixtures on the surface and use an absorbent cloth to gently wipe it off.

Do not use abrasive, ceramic, and metal cleaners, and steel wool for cleaning. In addition, steer clear of scrubbing motions because this will damage your laminate finish.

Wax Your Laminate Benchtop Surface Regularly

Regular waxing will form a protective layer on your laminate benchtop, allowing it to hold up well to stains by preventing easy penetration.

Avoid Dragging or Dropping Heavy Objects on Your Laminate Surface

Dropping or dragging heavy objects over your laminate benchtop can easily damage the laminate surface, especially the areas with seams. In addition, during your cooking preparations, do not scratch or cut directly on your benchtop surface with unglazed pottery or knives because this will lead to flaking of the laminate surface.

Don't Place Hot Items Directly on Your Laminate Benchtop

Your kitchen will have so many hot objects, including pots and pans among others. Placing these objects directly on the benchtop will damage your laminate surface since it may not withstand the amount of heat. For this reason, when placing pots or pans on the benchtop, make sure you use hotplates as well as hot pads.
