Why Hire a Demolition Company for Major Renovations or Teardowns of a House?

Posted on

If you need to conduct some major renovations on your home or even tear down the entire structure, you might assume you can handle the demolition on your own with a few heavy sledgehammers and perhaps a rented bobcat. While this might work if you're removing a small outbuilding or tearing down a home, removing an exterior wall, sunroom, and the like should be left to professionals. Note why this is and why a homeowner should think twice about trying to manage this work on their own.

Salvage material

When you have a home demolished or rip things out of a separate room, there are quite a few materials that you can actually salvage from this demolition. This might include exterior brick, wood used for framing, and roofing tiles. Interior materials like cabinets, stone floor tiles, and glass windows can also be salvaged and reused. There are also many materials that can be broken down and recycled, including drywall and carpeting.

If you try demolition yourself, you may be thinking of just taking these materials to a nearby landfill or may not know what can be recycled, and this is a huge waste; it also creates pollution as these materials break down. A demolition company may be better able to pick through these materials and bring them to a recycling facility, so there is less that winds up in landfills and less need to manufacture materials for new construction.

Safety and damage

You may think you know everything about safely demolishing a section of a home or even an entire home itself, but there may be details you're overlooking. For example, you might know to call the utility companies and shut off the water and power to the home, but what about overhead lines or underground pipes that you might accidentally damage with your bobcat? Even if you don't pull down overhead lines, it's easier to get caught on these lines and cause your bobcat to tip than you might realize.

If you demolish a part of your home by hand, note that load-bearing walls are not the only support of your home; even removing lightweight interior walls can cause surrounding walls to start to lean. In turn, cracks might form. Heavy vibrations from pounding and tearing up part of your home may also cause damage to windows and walls. A demolition company will know how to ensure the safety of your property and to keep damage minimal for entire demolitions or just a partial tear-down.
